In 2022 to 2023, 64% of adults aged 18 years and over in England were estimated to be overweight or living with obesity. UK local governments including the Greater London Authority, Bristol City Council and Cardiff Council have worked to protect their populations’ health by introducing policies which restrict unhealthy food and drink advertising across their advertising estates. This webinar explores the introduction of these healthier advertising policies across Councils in the UK, and the evidence which supports their implementation as an effective public health intervention.

Speakers include:

  • Fran Bernhardt, Sustain – on Sustain’s policy toolkit and how they have supported policymakers to introduce robust regulations that switch the spotlight to healthier, more sustainable products.

  • Sally Hogg, Bristol City Council Public Health Team – practice sharing from their experience of introducing a healthier food advertising policy.

  • Professor Frank de Vocht, University of Bristol – an overview of the available evidence from evaluations of advertising policies introduced across Transport for London, and by Bristol City Council and Cardiff Council.

  • Dr Kathrin Lauber, University of Edinburgh – on the bureaucratic politics of local advertising restrictions, focusing on challenges faced by local authorities and how teams developing advertising restrictions have navigated these.

There will also be an opportunity for discussion and a Q&A.
